The new growth around the base of your dreads is typically the messiest part and it’s the trickiest to tackle on your own. Here’s some of our
tips but we’d love you to leave a comment with what works for you.
🌸 Start by separating the loose hair so you can work out what belongs to what dread.
🌸 Now put the base of your dread between your index and middle finger and rub against the scalp in a circular motion to tease up the hair - A
little Dread Dust on your fingertips really helps this process!
🌸 Use a crochet hook to pull this loose teased hair back into the base of the dread. If it’s long enough, wrap it around the base before
pulling it in. The Advance Crochet Method - where you create a web around the dreadlock by swiping across the back then the front (see
previous post) - can also be used here.
🌸 And if you don’t have time, heck, just throw on a lovely wide cotton headband! 😁

Here is what we call the Advanced Crochet Method, in its most basic form. This method is ideal for dread making (after backcombing) and for maintenance when you have a lot of loose hairs to work back into the dread.
Step 1:
Scrape the hook from left to right along the back of the dread, grabbing a couple of loose hairs as you go.
Step 2:
Roll the hook so it’s facing down, then scrape along the front of the dread, again moving left to right.
Repeat this process - back, then front, then back, then front - while slowly rotating and moving down the dread. This builds a web of hair around the core of the dreadlock creating a neat, tidy, condensed dreadlock.
It’s also a good idea to spend a moment crocheting within the core of the dread by gently pushing the hook in and out in any areas that feel looser. #dreadmaintenance #dreadcreation #howtomakedreads #dreads #dreadlocksJanuary 13th 2026 -
